Ciampa talks about his future now that Triple H has run WWE Creative, NXT call-up process

Paul “Triple H” Levesque officially began his new role as WWE’s Chief Creative Officer on July 25. The announcement sent shock waves throughout the professional wrestling industry as it first meant in nearly 40 years that WWE would be booked by someone other than Vince McMahon. This led to immediate fan speculation (And many more memes) on who would benefit from this new creative direction, as several superstars helped Levesque build during his tenure managing the NXT brand. Among the names that have appeared the most is the former NXT Champion in (Tomaso) Ciampa.

The former main host of NXT TakeOver officially made it to the Raw roster on April 11, but it quickly became clear that McMahon and the creative minds who ran Raw didn’t have a fully developed idea of his role. Within weeks he had turned heel and lost his first name. He won his in-ring debut in early May, then began losing consistently on Raw while scoring some wins at the Main Event. His loose relationship with The Miz also solidified during “The A-Lister’s” with Logan Paul, which resulted in him being ringside in their match in summerslam. And while he was getting TV time, Ciampa’s booking under McMahon was a far cry from his time in NXT.

So what does his future hold now that Levesque runs the main roster? Ciampa talked about that speculation with ComicBook during summerslam Information day on Friday.

“Yeah (I’m excited to work with him) and I was excited about what we were doing too,” Ciampa said. “I’ve never worked with Vince, and the few I’ve worked with have been like, ‘Ah, this guy is a genius. That’s interesting, I want to pick his brain. I worked with Hunter (and said), “This guy is a genius, I want to pick his brain.” It’s exciting to be inside for what, 20 years from now, we’ll probably look back and go, ‘Stop, things are starting to turn there. To me, that’s cool. I don’t know what to expect, all I can do is what I’ve been doing. I can control what I can control. Regardless, whatever you want I will do to the best of my ability.”

He also speculated what the NXT recall would look like under the Levesque system. Oftentimes when bred by a wrestler from NXT, they are repackaged in pre-joint form to the main roster and the results have often been a mixed bag. It’s part of the reason why 20 of the former NXT Champions (including Ciampa), only 11 of them, have stayed with the company.

“It will be interesting to see how it goes,” Ciampa said. “Character development privately. Just from firsthand experience, even if the character is exactly the same as it was in NXT, the audience for Raw and SmackDown is different. It’s a lot bigger. Even if the character stays the same, that new audience still needs to know who they are.” It’s not like (Johnny) Gargano and Ciampa can have a feud and just continue on Raw because a lot of people are going to waste. They won’t understand the friendship, they won’t understand the tag team, they won’t understand the role. I’m still thinking no matter who’s in charge of creativity, when People show up for the first time, we need to introduce them to a new audience.

“We have to introduce it in small steps,” he continued. “I think that’s what was cool about the way it was presented to me. I know it might be slower than what people want, but for me, I enjoyed it. It’s like, ‘Hey, come with me for this story.'” People will have a chance to go , “I remember when people would jump from under the ring. I remember when he was with The Miz outside for summerslam“.I like it, when people feel they are part of the success.”

this week Monday Night Raw It could end up being the start of a new chapter for Ciampa. WWE has announced that he will be participating in a Triple Threat match likely to earn him a United States Championship match against Bobby Lashley.
